How do I manage Multiple Twitter Accounts? (iPhone/Desktop)
I work as a social media and community manager for a small app development company and one of the first problems I found when starting this position was the lack of ability to control all of their twitter accounts at once. It was extremely tedious and annoying to have to log-in over and over again each time that I wanted to check the @ replies or newsfeed relating to the app. Let’s be fair here – who wants to miss out on a sweet “@” reply! The first main issue was that not only did the company have a personal Twitter account, it also has multiple twitter accounts dedicated to each application. Ugh!
…So I began to research and test out different apps and websites. Initially I wanted something mobile so that I could check the different accounts on the go but quickly realized that a small iPhone screen was not going to cut it. Nonetheless Tweetdeck was the top contender as it kept everything quite simple and efficient.
I then switched to researching into a desktop client which proved to be more difficult than expected. I downloaded 3 apps. Nambu / Seesmic / Twhirl. All proved to do the job but each had its own faults. My main complaints were that Nambu was cluttered and that Twhirl was only single column. I currently have 6+ columns running at a time!
For the past 4 months I have used Seesmic daily. It runs smoothly on a mac and remains hidden while still constantly updating my newsfeed, @ replies and direct messages. The app is great as it allows for unlimited columns to manage the accounts as well as combine all @ replies into one column. The app only required an initial log-in to each account thus not making me re-log 6 different twitters each time I turn on the computer! The app allows me to individually make status updates as well as update a message across all the accounts at once. Edit: just tried the PC version, very polished also!

I toggle between 7 Twitter accounts on a daily basis and use HootSuite, which has proved to be an invaluable tool. I’m on a PC so I can’t comment on its Mac compatability but the interface is extremely flexible. It also allows you to manage Facebook fan pages. I urge you to test it out.

Thanks for spreading the word about Seesmic. I think this app could be useful to a lot of people managing multiple Twitter accounts. Here is some advice for those that have multiple Twitter accounts including professional and personal. It’s extremely important to keep the two separate and not make any mistakes by tweeting something meant for your personal account @ your business account. People have been fired for this very mistake.
